Why we should be able to speak English

    English is the most widely spoken language. Besides the UK itself, 60 of the world's 196 countries use English as an official language; The United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and many more. In addition, English is also a common second language spoken by many people in many countries, including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands. Overall, around 1.5 billion people speak English worldwide and another billion are in the process of learning it. Therefore, why is it important for us as Indonesians to learn English? Here are some of the reasons why we should be able to speak English including the benefits or advantages.

    English gives access to some of the best universities in the world. Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, MIT are some of the famous universities that top the world's education league tables, and it is necessary to be fluent in English to get into these universities, as they are all English-speaking. Needless to say, if a student wants to be able to study at one of these institutions, it is sure to start a career with a name on a well-known CV, and the benefits will show themselves.

 

    English gives wider access to knowledge and is the language of science. In the website Science Citation Index, compiled by the Institute for Scientific Information, it is estimates that 95% of articles are written in English, although only about half come from English-speaking countries. According to the Open University, “At Oxford University, two-thirds of postgraduate students come from outside the UK. Students recognize that learning in English is a major attraction”. Therefore, knowledge of English allows us to tap into more of the world's intellectual resources.

    English can expand the network. There are about 462 million native English speakers in the world. People can find someone who shares their interests and hobbies. Making friends with people from other countries has many advantages and benefits. They might invite us to visit them, travel with them, work with them, and help us with English. Therefore, with English, Indonesian people will get a network to multiply relationships around the world.

    English is a valuable skill that can be used for life. It is a widely spoken language and learning it can open many doors in personal or professional life, and provide many benefits. Be it for job opportunities, communication, travel, education, entertainment, cultural understanding, or just for personal growth, learning English is a smart choice.

    English is also the language of business. In today's globalized world, the ability to communicate effectively in English is essential for success in many industries. Moreover, English fluency can lead to higher salaries and more career advancement opportunities. Such as, the best music, books, and movies in the world are published and produced in English. Thus proficiency in English is a highly sought-after skill.
